GLOBAL crises, including the Covid-19 pandemic is responsible for the increase in food prices in Bahrain, Industry, Commerce and Tourism Minister Zayed Alzayani has said.
There will be a slight temporary increase in prices of food products due to Bahrain being an importer country and in the light of present sea freight crisis, he said in reply to a question by MP Dr Hisham Al Asheeri.
The ministry will step in in case a crisis or an exceptional situation arises in the market that requires an abnormal price rise of basic commodities, he said.
Mr Alzayani stressed the government’s efforts to confront unfair commercial practices, likely monopoly, connivance, fraud and violation of consumers’ rights, putting in place food security strategies, particularly during crises.
He said the legislative and executive branches along with civil society institutions must raise awareness and come up with methods to counter the issue through diversification of import sources and search for alternative markets.
