THE country has witnessed a significant drop in work-related injuries involving expatriates in both the private and public sectors.
However, there has been a rise in injuries involving Bahraini workers.
According to official figures for the third quarter of this year, 240 injury cases involving Bahrainis were reported in the private sector – up from 217 in Q3 of last year, and 90 cases involving Bahrainis were registered in the public sector – up from 44 in Q3 of last year.
Meanwhile, worksite accidents involving non-Bahrainis in the public sector dropped from 16 in Q3 of last year to 14 during the same period this year and from 275 in the private sector in Q3 last year to 199 this year.
The figures were revealed by the Social Insurance Organisation (SIO), the kingdom’s official agency for the advancement of social insurance and pension services to all individuals, in its Q3 2022 report.
A total of 330 Bahrainis (248 men and 82 women) were injured during the third quarter of this year in both private and public sectors. Injured expatriates numbered 213 during the same period in both sectors, 194 of which were men and 19 women.
The majority of injuries in the public sector were worksite incidents (66 Bahrainis – 36 males and 30 females - and 11 non-Bahrainis – five males and six females), while 20 citizens were hurt in road accidents (10 each among males and females) in the public sector, compared with three expatriates (one male and two females).
Meanwhile, two Bahraini male employees suffered from occupational diseases while another male citizen reported stress and fatigue in the public sector.
However, of the 240 injuries among Bahrainis in the private sector, 45 were the result of a slip or fall, 21 caused by objects falling on workers, 14 resulting from collision with moving machinery while 12 were entrapment. A total of 92 cases were categorised as ‘other injuries’.
Ten Bahrainis were wounded while using hand-tools and nine while operating machineries. Nine citizens collided with objects, nine more fell from high places, nine were hurt in traffic accidents, five were injured while lifting heavy goods and five were scarred while dealing with hot objects.
Of the total 199 worksite injuries among expatriates in the private sector, 25 were caused by objects falling on them, 24 were hurt after falling from high places and 21 either slipped or fell. A total of 72 were categorised as ‘other injuries’.
Meanwhile, 14 non-Bahrainis were trapped between solid objects, 11 were wounded while using hand tools and 10 suffered injuries while operating a machinery. Six sustained injuries after colliding with objects and five ran into moving machineries. Four expatriates were victims of road accidents and three were injured while lifting heavy materials.
According to the statistics, the majority of injuries among Bahrainis in the public sector during Q3 of 2022 were sustained by individuals aged between 41 and 50 (26 cases), with the same age group of non-Bahrainis suffering five incidents.
In the private sector, the majority of injured Bahrainis were aged between 21 and 30 (88 incidents) and non-Bahrainis between 31 and 40 (71 incidents).
