A COLD store employee is standing trial accused of selling drugs to his customers alongside bread, milk and bars of chocolate.
The 31-year-old Bangladeshi was arrested when he allegedly sold BD50 worth of crystal meth, locally known as shabu to an undercover police officer in Juffair in October.
Investigations were carried out by authorities after they received information about the defendant selling narcotics to customers at a cold store he works at, according to court documents.
The defendant denied the charges when he appeared at the High Criminal Court for his first hearing.
A detective described how he received a tip-off about alleged drug dealing taking place over the counter at a local store.
“I carried out investigations into accusations that a cold store employee was selling shabu to his customers,” the 30-year-old Bahraini told prosecutors.
“The defendant then agreed to sell BD50 worth of shabu to an undercover agent. He was arrested and admitted providing drugs to customers at the cold store.”
The defendant initially told prosecutors he needed the money because his pay was so low, the court heard.
“I was not getting enough money from working at the cold store,” he said in his statement to prosecutors.
“Some of the customers at the cold store and my friends then bought shabu from me.
“I wanted to save some money because my salary was not enough. I regret what I have done.”
The trial has been adjourned until Sunday for review.
