THE sixth edition of the Nasser bin Hamad Marine Heritage Season kicks off today at the Khalifa Bin Salman Park with a traditional rowing race.
The 3,000-metre race will begin in the sea next to the park and will extend to the waters off the Bahrain National Museum.
About 132 competitors will be participating in the opening race, with 12 teams being divided into 11 rowers each.
The winning team of the opening race will be presented with the Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa Cup, named after Supreme Council for Youth and Sports (SCYS) first deputy chairman, General Sports Authority chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee president.
The races will conclude next week, where the winner of that race will win the Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa Cup, named after His Majesty King Hamad’s representative for humanitarian work and youth affairs and SCYS chairman.
The top teams from the first round will qualify for the coveted King Hamad Cup which will be held towards the end of the season in October.
The Bahrain Inherited Traditional Sports Committee (Mawrooth), which is organising the event, met teams prior to the race to explain the rules and other technical matters regarding the races.
This season will also feature a competition titled “Ghais Al Mawrooth” where professional divers will aim to collect oysters at a depth of 15 metres without the use of modern diving equipment.
Additionally, the first round of the season will also include a fishing competition titled “Al Haddaq”.
The competition aims to preserve the pride and heritage of traditional Bahraini sporting events.
The current edition has expanded to include diving and fishing alongside traditional rowing.
Earlier this week, Mawrooth chairman Khalifa bin Abdulla Al Qaoud praised the organising committee for its hard work and dedication and stressed the importance of preserving traditions for the future generations to enjoy
He also confirmed that the ninth edition of the Nasser bin Hamad Falconry and Hunting Season will make its return in November and will go on until February.
