Manama and Muharraq emerged as winners on the opening day of the 2023-24 Nasser Bin Hamad Premier League last night.
Manama defeated Al Shabab 2-0 at the Khalifa Sports City Stadium while Muharraq held off Al Hidd 2-1 at Muharraq stadium in their opening games of the new season.
Ibrahim Al Khatal opened the scoring for Manama in the 52nd minute of the match. Seven minutes later, Weslen Jr converted a penalty to give Manama a 2-0 lead.
Al Shabab fought hard after the setback, but the strong Manama defence denied them any opportunity to get back into the game.
Meanwhile, Firas Chaouat put Muharraq ahead in the 55th minute, but Al Hidd drew level in the 65th minute through Kameel Al Adhem. Hamza Al Chuban, however, netted the winner for Muharraq in the 82nd minute.
The opening round matches continue today when Al Hala take on Busaiteen and Al Riffa clash with Al Najma. Both matches are scheduled to kick off at 7pm.
The first round concludes tomorrow, when East Riffa play Al Ahli and Sitra lock horns with reigning champions Al Khaldiya.
