One of the kingdom’s state-of-the-art medical facilities has been recognised for its excellence in design in a prestigious regional accolade.
The King Hamad American Mission Hospital (KHAMH), situated in A’ali, has won the best designed hospital project in the 13th Annual MEED Projects Awards, much to the delight of AMH chief executive and medical director Dr George Cheriyan.
“It has been intentionally designed as a smart hospital for the future,” said Dr Cheriyan. “We’re extremely proud to be the winners of this prestigious award for great care has been taken to make it ‘patient centred’, incorporating wellness and healing as a primary feature of its design.”
The awards, which has a history of highlighting ground-breaking projects and individuals in the engineering industry since 2007, celebrates the best and brightest projects completed in the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region over the past 12 months with more than 100 projects across 17 categories selected as national winners.
They are selected based on their technological innovation, engineering excellence, commitment to sustainable practices and overall benefit to society and KHAMH was chosen as the National Winner for the Healthcare Project of the Year.
The smart hospital, which was inaugurated by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, in January, provides a wide-range of healthcare services and contains 125 beds, a ward for women and children, and a ward for various surgical medical specialties.
It also includes operating rooms, eight intensive care unit beds, 18 neonatal intensive care units beds, a dialysis unit consisting of 20 beds, a laboratory and radiology centre with the latest technology and medical devices. There are also 65 outpatient suites, 25 emergency beds, six labour, delivery and recovery beds and five operating rooms (with one hybrid and one advanced imaging).
The eco-friendly, partly solar-run project includes a 270-seat auditorium and underground parking for 500 cars. There is also a comfortable staff accommodation building within the premises.
American Mission Hospital has been known for its several achievements as well as its 120-year-legacy as one of the first hospitals in the region. The AMH opened its first facility in Bahrain on January 26, 1903.
