The holy month of Ramadan has started and here are some basic etiquettes that every non-muslim should be mindful of.
Here's an etiquette guide for all non-Muslims to follow during Ramadan month!
1. As Muslims abstain from food or drink all day, eating, drinking, chewing, or smoking in public is strictly forbidden. These are punishable offences by law and could lead to up to 1 year in jail and BD100 in fines.
2. Wishing your Muslim friends and colleagues ‘Ramadan Mubarak’ can be one way to embrace the community spirit.
3. Avoid playing loud music as it may cause disturbance to people who are fasting. Use your headphones instead.
4. As a non-Muslim you can fast too with your fellow-Muslims, but don’t say you are fasting because you want to lose weight. Ramadan is a time for communal gathering, spiritual development and service.
5. Dress modestly and avoid tight-fitting clothes.
6. Don't miss the chance to be a part of the community if you get invited to an Iftar by a friend. This is seen as a sign of respect and friendliness.
7. Avoid public displays of affection.
