A discussion session titled “Journalism: Future Trends and Development Requirements” was held yesterday on the sidelines of the 8th edition of the Prime Minister’s Award for Journalism 2024.
The speakers at the session were Editor-in-Chief of Akhbar Al Khaleej Anwar Abdulrahman, Editor-in-Chief of Al Bilad Moanes Al Mardi, chairman of Oman Journalists’ Association Dr Mohammed Al Araimi and chairwoman of the UAE Journalists’ Association Fadila Abdullah Al Muaini.
Mr Abdulrahman spoke about the journalists of the old days who witnessed all the developments and changes of the early beginnings of journalism. He also highlighted the challenges that newspapers currently face and the need for them to co-ordinate to develop a work plan and a unified system for advertisements, in order to save newspapers and keep pace with the developments taking place.
Dr Al Araimi highlighted the challenges facing journalism globally, saying that artificial intelligence (AI) is a double-edged sword and has a significant impact on journalism. Those working in the IT field must know the best ways to deal with it and harness it to serve journalism and its establishments and institutions.
Mr Al Mardi stressed the need for journalism to adapt to emerging challenges, especially artificial intelligence, which has become a dominant force in today’s world. He explained that journalism faces a big challenge and unfair competition from non-specialised platforms that have begun to play the role of the journalist.
Ms Al Muaini asked how to deal with artificial intelligence in a way that befits journalism in the region, and said that some newspapers have turned the AI challenges into opportunities through the concept of what is called the “mobile journalist”. This enabled newspapers to survive by providing high-quality and attractive content to the readers. “As journalists, we must be able to keep pace with the technological developments taking place around us,” she said.
