A BAHRAINI duo has managed to scale to new heights, successfully climbing Russia and Europe’s highest mountain and raising the kingdom’s flag on the summit.
Mohammed Al Maamari and Ali Shakeeb successfully climbed 5,642-metre Mount Elbrus in a journey that was organised by the Youth Affairs Ministry in co-operation with Bahrain Youth Hostels and the Bahrain Fitness Academy.
“We managed to achieve our desired goal by raising Bahrain’s flag on the highest mountain in Europe, and one of the highest peaks in the world,” said Mr Al Maamari.
“The difficult climate conditions and low temperatures made the journey difficult in addition to a number of challenges that we were able to overcome.”
Mr Shakeeb expressed pride in his accomplishment and dedicated it to the youth of Bahrain.
“This adds to what is already a number of accomplishments by young Bahrainis,” he said.
“The oxygen levels at high altitudes made the climb difficult, but it was all worth it in the end.”
Journey leader Musab Hamada praised the Bahraini youngsters for their determination and endurance, emphasising the importance of such an achievement.
“Taking on such a journey requires physical and mental preparation,” he said.
“The young men were keen to test themselves, and they really exceeded all expectations, showcasing their abilities to be able to reach their goals.”
