A LONG-TERM resident, who was under intensive care for a medical condition for the past 13 years, returned to his country yesterday.
Indian Paul Xavier arrived in Bahrain 46 years ago by ship and started his career with Delmon Restaurant. However, other details about the 64-year-old’s residence and employment history are unavailable.
In 2011, he suffered a brain injury in an accident. After undergoing craniotomy and cranioplasty surgeries, he was admitted to Muharraq Maternity and Geriatric Hospital, after three years at the Salmaniya Medical Complex.
Despite being bedridden and disoriented and requiring round-the-clock assistance, Mr Xavier made significant progress and by August 2013 he had undergone further procedures, including a cystolitholapaxy for bladder stones and a laparotomy for an abdominal check at King Hamad University Hospital, which helped stabilise his health.
He is now able to perform basic tasks with assistance.
Mr Xavier left for his native Palluruthy, Ernakulam in Kerala where his brother, who is three years his senior, has agreed to look after him.
The repatriation was facilitated by Pravasi Legal Cell Bahrain president Sudheer Thirunilath, who secured the required documents and an outpass, Bahrain immigration authorities, the Indian Embassy and India’s External Affairs Ministry.
