MPs yesterday unanimously approved financial support for Bahraini private sector employees and small enterprise owners earning less than BD1,500 a month.
A parliamentary proposal was submitted by MP Hanan Fardan, who believes that a regular monthly allowance would help low-income citizens meet the rising cost of living and other economic uncertainties.
“The proposed allowance targets two key groups within the low-income segment, the first being Bahraini nationals employed in the private sector and earning less than BD1,500 a month,” she said.
“Secondly, Bahraini entrepreneurs and owners of small enterprises whose businesses generate less than BD1,500 per month would also qualify.”
She explained that the allowance aims to reduce income disparities in society.
Parliament’s financial and economic affairs committee chairman Ahmed Al Salloom backed the proposal, saying it could have a range of social and economic benefits.
It will now be reviewed by the Cabinet.
