In 1993, a group of visionary Pakistanis, led by Mohamed Afdhal Najeeb, laid the foundation for what would become a cornerstone of the Pakistani community in Bahrain – Al Saqafa, the Pakistan Association.
The group has established a welfare organisation and a cultural forum that provides support, connection and representation for their people.
Among the early pioneers were notable figures such as Dr Abdul Qahir, Noor Pathan, Imtiaz Pervez, Syed Wahajuddin Ahmed, S M Iqbal, Shakeel Anwar and Dr Haroon Memon, whose collective dedication helped shape Al Saqafa into a vital institution.
Over the past three decades, Al Saqafa has evolved into an influential platform, not only preserving cultural traditions but also uplifting its members through various social, literary, and charitable initiatives.
The association has hosted literary nights, family BBQs, educational symposiums and charity programmes, with a portion of its proceeds supporting local charities and scholarships for underprivileged students.
“It’s an honour to be at the helm of an organisation that is an official representative body of Pakistanis residing in the Kingdom of Bahrain,” says chairman Syed Altaf Azim.
Under his leadership, Al Saqafa continues to strengthen the community’s presence in Bahrain.
“We have always strived to portray the best of our community, lift them, and remain shoulder to shoulder with them,” he adds.
“I want the Pakistani community to stand out and be ‘the best,’ and this is only possible with your relentless support and selfless commitment.”
His rallying call, ‘Let’s leave our mark behind. Together we rise’, resonates deeply with the association’s mission to foster pride, unity and progress.
Beyond social gatherings, Al Saqafa has made a name for itself as a cultural powerhouse, hosting renowned literary figures and artists from Pakistan and India.
Its well-curated events, ranging from classical musical evenings to high-profile symposiums, have cemented its reputation among Bahrain’s premier cultural and social organisations.
