The eighth and largest edition of the Nasser Bin Hamad Marine Heritage Season kicks off today with the Open Water Swimming Competition (Mawrooth Swimmer) in Bahrain Bay.
A total of 80 swimmers are set to take part in the competition which is divided into two main categories.
The first race will be for swimmers aged between 30 and 45 and will cover a distance of 1,000 metres, while the second race, covering a distance of 800m, is designated for swimmers aged over 45.
The competition is being sponsored by His Majesty King Hamad’s representative for humanitarian work and youth affairs and Supreme Council for Youth and Sports chairman Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa as part of his keenness to revive the maritime heritage and enhance the Bahraini society’s connection to its traditional sports in a modern and competitive spirit.
The annual Nasser Bin Hamad Marine Heritage Season is one of the most prominent competitions organised by the Bahrain Inherited Traditional Sports Committee (Mawrooth).

The latest edition of the season, which runs until mid-November, includes multiple competitions aiming to revive Bahrain’s marine heritage, which has long been renowned and established the kingdom as an important regional centre for pearl diving.
The season is set to feature participants from across the GCC and will showcase a rich array of competitions, including traditional swimming, pearl diving (Heir), breath-holding and sea-chanting (Nahham), alongside heritage rowing races and traditional fishing contests.
To highlight the authentic maritime sound art, the Nahham competition will be held inside the studios of the Information Ministry.

The season seeks to preserve Bahrain’s traditional pearl diving heritage.
The season was launched years ago to revive traditional sea sports, and the mission is to preserve the pride and heritage of Bahraini sporting events.
Mawrooth, a committee set up in 2018 to preserve Bahraini traditional games and sports, has organised several traditional events in the past few years that have been popular among locals and GCC nationals.
The organising committee for the open water swimming competition has finalised the necessary arrangements for the event, holding meetings with the participants and other relevant entities to finalise the rules, regulations and safety procedures.
