A knee joint replacement surgery, using the VELYS robotic surgical system, was successfully performed by the Royal Medical Services (RMS) Orthopaedic Surgery Clinic.
The surgery, which the hospital described as ‘a milestone’, was held under the supervision of commander Brigadier General Dr Shaikh Fahad bin Khalifa Al Khalifa.
The patient had her right knee operated on using the robotic system and was already doing well about nine days later.
She said the robotic surgery had a significant advantage over the traditional operation as physical therapy took less time.
She is already able to bend and straighten her knee more easily and is experiencing far less pain, and did not suffer from any bruises.
Stitches were not only fewer, but also easier to manage, which sped up the healing process, the hospital said in a statement.
