Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Media Regulation has introduced a new set of regulations for social media, laying out broad restrictions on what users can post and how they present themselves online. The rules are designed to combat bullying and misinformation.
Material that could be considered bullying, mocking others, or disclosing private family matters is now prohibited. Similarly, any content that features children or domestic workers as part of daily lifestyle posts, whether positive or negative, is also banned.
The new regulations also cover appearances. Outfits deemed at odds with societal values and content quality standards are prohibited.
The rules further target misinformation, obscene language, and displays of personal wealth, such as flaunting money, cars, or property, as well as boasting about lineage, tribe, or regional identity.
Authorities have warned that those who violate the rules will face large fines.
