An expat in Al Ain, UAE, is set to be deported after taking his female co-worker's car without her knowledge, driving it recklessly and getting tickets, eventually leading to its impoundment.
The Al Ain Court for Civil, Commercial, and Administrative Claims ordered him to pay her AED10,000 (BD1,000) in compensation, following his prior criminal convictions that resulted in a prison sentence, confiscation of the car, a one-year licence suspension, and deportation.
The woman filed a lawsuit against him seeking AED11,000 (BD1,100) to cover damages to the car and its release from impoundment, as well as AED10,000 (BD1,000) in compensation for her loss of use of the car.
The man argued in court that he reimbursed her for part of the expenses, showing evidence of an AED9,400 (BD940) bank transfer to help release the vehicle. He requested the case be dismissed on that basis.
However, the court affirmed the criminal verdict and, while acknowledging his reimbursement, ordered him to pay AED10,000 (BD1,000) as a fair amount for material and emotional damages.
