Bahrain is committed to energy market security and stability, Transportation and Telecommunications Minister Dr Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa has said.
He emphasised the importance of enhancing international co-operation to face growing threats to supply chains and the key principles of global trade.
“These illegal activities not only threaten maritime safety and environmental protection but also pose direct risks to the global economy and financial systems, especially in strategic waterways like the Strait of Hormuz, Bab Al Mandab, and the Suez Canal, which handle most global trade,” he said.
Dr Shaikh Abdulla was addressing a session on maritime navigation leadership in the 13th Energy Markets Forum held in Fujairah, UAE, under the theme ‘How could the Midstream Energy Industry Reimagine Growth in a Disrupted World: Risks and Opportunities?’.
He highlighted the need to utilise modern technologies such as satellite imagery, AI-based tracking, and data analytics to improve monitoring of suspicious and non-compliant vessels.
“Imposing strict sanctions on ships, owners and operators engaged in illegal activities is essential for ensuring the security and stability of energy markets,” he said.
He underscored the commitment of Bahrain and the international community to achieving a safe, stable and sustainable energy market.
He concluded that strengthening international co-operation and protecting vital maritime routes are key to ensuring energy market stability, environmental preservation, and supporting sustainable development.
The forum is an international platform that brings together energy experts, decision-makers, and investors worldwide to discuss key issues affecting global energy markets, current challenges, and future opportunities.
The minister attended a dinner hosted by Industry and Economy Department chairman and Port of Fujairah Authority chairman Shaikh Saleh bin Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi. Leaders in ports and shipping were honoured at the event, highlighting Fujairah’s pivotal role in trade movement and global energy.
