TENNIS – Bahrain’s Sophia Bader barged into the girls’ singles semi-finals in the Bahrain ATF 16U tournament, currently being played at the Bahrain Tennis Federation (BTF) hard courts in Isa Town.
Sophia upset top-seeded compatriot Salma Faragallah 6-2, 6-3 in their round-of-eight contest, and now moves on to play fourth seed Mariam Alabbasi, who defeated fellow-Bahraini Haneen Alnajar 6-0, 6-4 in their quarter-final match.
The other girls’ last-four clash is between second seed Fatima Albaajari from Saudi Arabia and third seed Gharam Isa from Bahrain. Fatima beat Bahraini Sagarika Nayak 6-1, 6-0 to march through, while Gharam won against compatriot Layal Basel via walkover.
On the distaff, boys’ singles top seed Ahmed Alsayed of Bahrain advanced to his semi-final round with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Abdulaziz Altamimi from Saudi Arabia. He will now face another Saudi in seventh seed Ali Alahmad, who overcame Bahraini third seed Talal Alsayed 6-1, 6-2.
Bahrain’s Hashim Altoobli is also in the final four. He defeated Jayden Rebello from Australia 6-2, 6-3 and will now take on fourth seed Ahmad Sarouji from Saudi, who beat fifth-seeded Indian Parth Sane 6-1, 6-2.
In the boys’ doubles, an all-Bahraini semi-final pits Ahmed and Talal against Hashim and Redha Hasan; while the other game will be played between Sane and Abdulrahman Aldoseri against Salman and Sultan Alyami from Saudi.
The ongoing Bahrain ATF 16U competition is the first of two successive Asian Tennis Federation (ATF) events for this age group that are being held in the kingdom.
