An 86-year-old man, Roy Marsh, was fined EUR 250 (BD 110) for littering after spitting out a leaf that had blown into his mouth in Lincolnshire.
Marsh had been resting after a walk on a windy day when the leaf flew into his mouth. He spat it out and was about to leave when two District Council officers approached him. They claimed he had spat on the ground and issued a littering fine. Marsh reportedly told one officer he was being a “silly boy.”
The fine was reduced on appeal to EUR150 (BD66), which Marsh eventually paid.
The incident came to light after several other residents complained to Lincolnshire County Council about similar experiences.
