GULF WEEKLY -
The coming-of-age novel Before I Forget by American-Canadian author Tory Hoen’s has hit the shelves.
The domestic fiction follows 26-year-old Cricket Campbell, who is stuck in a dead-end job at a wellness company.
When her father is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, it presents an opportunity for her to return home and become his caretaker. While she hopes to repair their strained relationship and shake herself out of the rut that she has been in, even deeply familiar places can hold surprises. She discovers that her father possesses a rare gift: as he loses his grasp of the past, he is increasingly able to predict the future.
In an interview, the former New York Magazine editor noted that her personal inspiration for the story was her own father being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, when she was in her 20s; he died when she was in her 30s.
“I certainly didn’t want to make light of Alzheimer’s,” she said.
“It’s heart-breaking for the families going through it. But at the same time, I found with my father that he retained a lot of his sense of humour. We were able to have very meaningful moments even after he did not know who I was anymore,” she added.
“I wanted to tell a story that conveyed both the light and the dark sides of the disease and the ways that families navigate it with humour and grace.”
