A man who drunkenly headbutted police officers attempting to arrest him has filed an appeal against his one-year prison sentence.
Last month, the High Criminal Court found the Bahraini guilty of assaulting on-duty public service personnel to prevent them from performing their duties, publicly insulting civil servants, and offending their honour.
The 24-year-old has now taken his case to the Supreme Criminal Appeals Court to contest the ruling.
The policeman who was headbutted testified in court.
“My partner and I went to a house in East Riffa to respond to a report about the suspect causing a disruption and damaging furniture at home,” he said.
“The residents of the house let us in and led us to his room on the first floor. We asked him to accompany us to the police station, but he did not co-operate. He was intoxicated.
“We handcuffed him, and while escorting him down the stairs, he struck my head with his own.
“We managed to restrain him and take him to the station, but once there, he kicked my partner in the stomach and hurled insults at him.”
Neither officer sustained injuries during the October incident, the court heard.
Judges adjourned the hearing to Sunday for a lawyer to be appointed to represent the appellant.
