A man has been accused of weaponising an insect-killing spray in an attempt to harm police officers who came to his home to arrest him after a brotherly bust-up.
The unemployed 45-year-old Bahraini had been reported to authorities by his brother, after he allegedly threatened to kill his sibling and burn their house down.
Responding to the call, a pair of officers arrived at the residence to arrest him and knocked on the door of his room, but he refused to open it.
Eventually, the Civil Defence was summoned to help police enter the room.
“When the door was opened, the defendant was standing behind it, with an aerosol can pointed at the policemen and a lighter in hand,” read Public Prosecution documents.
“As soon as he saw them, he set the spray on fire in the direction of the police and Civil Defence members, with the intention of harming them and preventing them from entering and performing their duties.”
A water hose was used to help dampen his anger and bring him under control, and he was apprehended.
He was charged with attempting to harm policemen but failing to do so due to factors outside of his control.
He reportedly admitted to possessing the insect spray and a plastic lighter, but denied the charges in court, claiming to have been drunk and having no memory of what took place on the day of the incident.
Policemen testified that they were responding to a domestic incident and that the defendant was uncooperative and was ‘dealt with’ using water ‘to ensure his and others’ safety’.
“There was a fight between me and my brother, and I threw items belonging to him out of the house,” the Bahraini defendant testified. “He called the police on me and I was arrested, but he came to the station and withdrew charges, and I was let out of remand.
“Later, I was informed that I was to be charged with resisting arrest, but I don’t remember anything because I wasn’t in possession of my senses. Had I been fully conscious of my actions, I wouldn’t have done it.”
Meanwhile, the actual report was that the suspect was threatening his brother with a sharp tool – a saw – and had damaged security cameras belonging to the house.
Court documents stated that he threatened to beat him, kill him and burn down the house, while raising a knife against him, which led him to lodge a police complaint.
The trial continues.
