Foreign Minister Dr Abdulatif Al Zayani held telephone calls with a number of foreign ministers of Arab countries.
The calls addressed the latest regional developments and diplomatic efforts undertaken by Bahrain in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) regarding the Iranian aggressions against the GCC countries and Jordan, the repercussions of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz on international navigation and the global economy, and the active diplomatic role played by the kingdom through its non-permanent membership in the council, and its presidency during the current month of April.
Dr Al Zayani received calls from Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud; UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Shaikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan; Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani; Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Living Abroad Nasser Bourita; and GCC Secretary General Jasem Al Budaiwi.
The ministers and Mr Al Budaiwi commended Bahrain’s efforts, under its presidency of the UNSC, and its initiative to submit a draft resolution to the council, on behalf of the GCC countries and Jordan, regarding securing maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
This comes as a response to the challenges that threaten one of the most vital corridors for international trade. They stressed the importance of this step in protecting the security of international navigation, ensuring the stability of energy supplies, maintaining global food supply chains, and strengthening international efforts aimed at consolidating regional and international security and stability.
They also underscored the need to continue co-ordination and consultation regarding the current situation, and work on mobilising international support to compel Iran to comply with international law and take into account the interests of the world’s nations, and to reopen the strait to international navigation as an international waterway, in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Dr Al Zayani expressed appreciation to the ministers and the secretary general for their continuous support during Bahrain’s UNSC presidency, the stage of submitting the draft resolution, and for the co-operation and co-ordination shown by the diplomatic missions in New York.
