The Indian Embassy has issued a warning, urging individuals to ignore suspicious phone calls claiming to be from the embassy, following a recent incident involving impersonators posing as officials from the External Affairs Ministry, New Delhi.
The scam involves the use of spoofed telephone number (+911123017160) to deceive individuals into sharing sensitive personal and financial information.
“These callers attempt to obtain sensitive personal information, including credit card details or extort money by falsely claiming issues with passports, visa applications or immigration documents,” the embassy said in a statement yesterday. “They also may threaten consequences, such as deportation to India, or imprisonment if payments are not made.”
The embassy clarified that its officials do not request personal information over the phone. “If additional documentation is required from an applicant, requests are made only via official emails sent from the domain @mea.gov.in,” the statement said.
- Members of the public are strongly advised not to share personal or financial information or transfer money to callers. Any incidents of this nature can be reported to the embassy wel2.bahrain@mea.gov.in or police.
