MPs are set to discuss a draft law approving Bahrain’s accession to Annex VI of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships.
It aims to tighten controls on air pollution from maritime operations and align the kingdom with global environmental standards.
The report, prepared by the public utilities and environment affairs committee, supports Bahrain’s formal accession to Annex VI, which regulates emissions from ships, including sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter and other harmful gases, while introducing stricter fuel and energy efficiency standards.
The committee said the step would strengthen Bahrain’s environmental governance and support its long-term climate commitments, including progress towards net-zero emissions by 2060 and the National Air Quality Strategy.
Committee chairman MP Mohammed Al Bulooshi said Bahrain’s compliance with Annex VI ensures that Bahraini-flagged vessels are aligned with global emission regulations, reducing the risk of inspections, delays, and operational barriers in international ports.
“This directly supports the efficiency of our shipping sector and strengthens confidence in Bahrain as a responsible maritime partner,” he added.
The Transportation and Telecommunications Ministry and the Oil and Environment Ministry have backed the move.
