Pakistan’s Directorate General of Immigration and Passports (DGIP) has announced major updates to passport services, introducing several digital facilitation measures.
DGIP Chief Muhammad Ali Randhawa said that the online passport application system will be enhanced. Officials are currently debating whether to launch a dedicated application, similar to NADRA’s Pak-ID, or expand the existing NADRA platform.
The DGIP will also introduce a nationwide passport home delivery service. Applicants will soon be able to pay a nominal courier fee to have their passports shipped directly to their doorsteps from Islamabad. In the second phase, authorities plan to extend this service to overseas Pakistanis.
Furthermore, passport services will go completely cashless from June 30, meaning applicants will no longer be allowed to deposit passport fees at National Bank of Pakistan branches. The DGIP will activate a digital system that issues passport tokens with a QR code, allowing applicants to securely pay fees directly through their mobile banking applications.
The DGIP also announced the launch of a dedicated AI chatbot to assist citizens with the application process. The move is expected to reduce the burden on the department’s call centre, which is currently undergoing expansion.
