THE first Bahraini citizen to receive treatment outside the US for sickle cell disease using a bone marrow transplantation technology with Casgevy, expressed appreciation for his meeting with His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister.
In an exclusive interview with our sister paper Akhbar Al Khaleej, Amjad Kazem Ahmed, who received the treatment in Bahrain, commended the paternal care of HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister and his keenness to get assured about his health.
He noted that the support of His Majesty King Hamad, and the follow-up of His Royal Highness the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, were the greatest motivation in helping him overcome the most difficult stages of treatment. He also praised the provision of the latest treatment technologies for sickle cell patients in Bahrain.
Mr Amjad explained that the treatment journey lasted around two years, during which he underwent a series of precise medical examinations, chemotherapy, and medical isolation, before undergoing gene editing using the “CRISPR” technique.
The procedure, he said, helped eliminate the main complications of the disease, transforming him from a sickle cell patient into merely a carrier of the condition.
Mr Amjad also expressed his appreciation to the medical staff at Salmaniya Medical Complex and the Royal Medical Services, describing them as “angels of mercy” for the care and support they provided throughout his treatment journey.
