Permanent Representative of Bahrain to the United Nations in New York Ambassador Jamal Al Rowaiei delivered a statement on behalf of the Arab Group during the UN General Assembly session of the Intergovernmental Negotiations on Security Council reform.
The statement stressed the importance of achieving comprehensive and balanced reform of the Security Council that reflects contemporary international realities and enjoys the broadest possible consensus among member states. It reaffirmed the Arab Group’s commitment to constructive engagement in the reform process and to working with all partners towards meaningful reform.
It noted the Arab Group’s appreciation for the efforts of the co-chairs of the Intergovernmental Negotiations, emphasising that discussions on the outcomes of the current session should take into account the positions of all member states and negotiating groups through a comprehensive and balanced approach addressing all aspects of reform in an integrated manner.
Regarding the Consolidated List, it stated that any proposed model should be based on areas of convergence among negotiating groups and should fairly and accurately reflect all major proposals without exclusion or marginalisation.
The statement also reiterated the Arab Group’s position that the issue of the veto is closely linked to equitable representation within the Security Council. It stressed that any credible reform must address existing structural imbalances, including the continued absence of permanent Arab representation despite the Arab Group’s political and demographic weight and its central role in issues related to international peace and security.
