In times of stability, the impact of words may appear limited. But in times of crisis, thoughtful and responsible discourse becomes an essential pillar of national security and social stability. Anyone observing the intellectual landscape in Bahrain cannot fail to notice that many who express opinions do so without a comprehensive understanding of the realities and changing circumstances surrounding them. At the same time, the state has deliberately refrained from imposing a specific ideological direction on public debate, instead engaging with differing viewpoints in good faith and with a sense of responsibility.
Over the past decades, the same pattern has repeatedly emerged. Voices driven by ideology have appeared alongside others inclined toward abstract theorising, while some politically motivated figures have attempted, through statements and social media posts, to reintroduce themselves to society in ways that differ from their true record, ignoring positions they previously held.
Life is a mission, and the value of that mission becomes most evident during times of crisis. It is under exceptional circumstances that people’s true character is revealed — whether they are ordinary citizens, devoted officials, or intellectuals entrusted with the responsibility of interpreting reality and exposing its deeper dimensions.
What is regrettable, however, is that many of our intellectuals have chosen silence since the beginning of the current crisis. We have seen little by way of meaningful engagement proportionate to the magnitude of the challenges facing the nation. This raises an important question: where is the role of the true intellectual in decisive moments?
A genuine intellectual does not merely observe events from afar. He or she bears a national and moral responsibility to defend the unity of the homeland, clarify facts, and anticipate consequences — free from emotional reactions, fear, or narrow calculations.
In times of crisis, an informed and responsible word can be more powerful than any weapon, because it strengthens unity, deepens awareness, and confronts attempts to sow doubt or division.
Society expects its intellectuals to explain ambiguities and provide rational perspectives that help people understand what is happening, rather than remaining trapped in silence or intellectual isolation.
The role of the intellectual is not confined to criticism or theoretical discourse. It also extends to safeguarding national identity and reinforcing social cohesion.
The importance of intellectuals during times of crisis can be illustrated by what occurred during the Second World War, when Nazi Germany was planning to invade the British Isles. Historical documents reveal that Nazi authorities intended to arrest British intellectuals in the first days of any invasion because they understood the influence intellectuals wielded in strengthening national consciousness and defending their homeland. This incident was documented by American historian William Lawrence Shirer in his book The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich.
It is worth noting that Shirer was an American journalist, war correspondent and historian. His landmark work on Nazi Germany has remained widely read and cited in academic studies for more than six decades, and its 50th anniversary was marked by the release of a commemorative edition.
This historical example underscores the prominent place occupied by patriotic intellectuals and the historic responsibility they bear in protecting national identity and strengthening public awareness during periods of challenge.
Quite frankly, many of our intellectuals have not demonstrated a level of engagement commensurate with the gravity of the current phase, despite it being among the most difficult periods in the nation’s history.
Today, therefore, the sense of responsibility requires intellectuals to be present through both their writing and their public stance, contributing to the strengthening of national awareness at one of the most sensitive moments the country has faced.
The responsibility of intellectuals becomes even more critical when slogans become confused with facts, and when major causes are exploited as cover for political or expansionist agendas that threaten the security and stability of nations. The regional scene today has exposed the contradiction between lofty rhetoric and realities on the ground, as some narratives claiming to defend the Arab nation and its just causes have instead become tools for destabilising Arab states and interfering in their internal affairs.
Accordingly, the role of the patriotic intellectual is not limited to condemning threats; it also includes exposing deceptive attempts that seek to justify or sanitise aggression under ideological or religious banners. When threats reach the nation’s borders and the security of society itself, intellectual silence becomes a dangerous vacuum — one that can easily be filled by emotional rhetoric, baseless justification or polarisation.
This is a message I have addressed several times before to the intellectual and cultural elites in the kingdom. I repeat it today during a defining phase in the history of both the nation and the region, during which many realities and true faces have been revealed. Those who failed to defend the sovereignty of the homeland at such a moment should not suffice with issuing hollow statements. Rather, they must work seriously to correct the misconceptions instilled in segments of the younger generation, many of whom have fallen victim over the years to misleading ideas and narratives.
Today’s youth are confronted with an overwhelming flood of conflicting messages across digital platforms, making the role of the intellectual more important than ever in building balanced awareness capable of protecting younger generations from ideological extremism and from being swept away by false slogans.
So, has the time not come for our intellectuals to dust off their pens and fulfil their true role as guardians of awareness, pioneers of thought, and defenders of the nation’s identity?
The words written by intellectuals today do not influence only the present; they also help shape how future generations understand their homeland and its causes.
History will remain a witness to the positions intellectuals took during decisive moments: some chose to become a voice for the nation, while others preferred silence when their countries needed courageous words the most.
