I cannot recall how many years ago I first read about plans to upgrade bus stops with air conditioning, renovations and even cafeterias – improvements I still hope to see one day, rather than just read about.
This morning at the Central Market bus stop in Manama, the display showed three buses: one marked ‘43 Juffair – Arrived’ and another ‘A-1 Isa Town’ due in eight minutes.
Based on past experience, it was unclear whether this indicated a bus coming from Isa Town towards the airport or from the airport heading to Isa Town.
After waiting in the sun at around 10.30am, an ‘A-1 Airport’ bus arrived instead. When I checked the display again for the Isa Town service, the information had not changed. As I tried to photograph it, I noticed the Arabic display was frozen, still showing a date from April.
As a regular commuter, I do not ask for cafeterias or costly upgrades – I already walk a kilometre to the bus stop under the sun – but I do hope for something simpler: that the displays are maintained and provide clear, accurate information, and that bus drivers stop for elderly passengers instead of leaving them behind to wait for the next service.
