A total of 70 nurses in the kingdom, who have dedicated more than 25 years of service, are set to be honoured in a dazzling award ceremony staged by the Indian Ladies Association (ILA).
Nightingales of Bahrain – Service Award 2026 will be held on Wednesday from 6.30pm at the King Hamad American Mission Hospital, A’Ali, as part of the women’s group’s 70th anniversary.
It will celebrate the silent heroes whose compassion, dedication and care continue to inspire and strengthen the healthcare community in Bahrain.
Bahrain Nursing Society president Seham Bubshait will be the chief guest at the event and Bahrain Medical Society president Dr Amer Al Durazi will be the guest of honour.
The ILA is the island’s oldest expatriate non-governmental organisation. Founded in 1956 by Leela Jashanmal and a group of enterprising Indian women, the association was established to serve the local community, foster cultural exchange and empower women.
The upcoming Service Award is in keeping with the same foundational spirit and follows close on the heels of International Nurses Day. Celebrated annually on May 12, the observance honours nurses’ essential contributions to global healthcare and commemorates the birth of Florence Nightingale – the founder of modern nursing.
This year’s theme – ‘Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives’ – led by the International Council of Nurses, highlights the necessity of providing nurses with safe working environments, fair compensation, leadership opportunities and adequate resources so they can maximise their life-saving impact.
“As part of our 70th year celebrations, we thought it would be a meaningful tribute to honour our nurses, who stand as the backbone of healthcare and communities,” ILA president Smitha Jensen told the GDN.
“On this occasion, ILA is not only thanking nurses for their service, but also highlighting the important role they play in protecting life, supporting recovery and bringing comfort to those in need.
“Over the years, ILA has been grateful to collaborate with nurses through our medical camps for workers and other initiatives celebrating the profession and the meaningful impact it has beyond the hospital walls. The Nightingale Award is our way of honouring the compassion, courage and commitment nurses bring to healthcare every day,” she added.
