Three inmates fled from Kuwait’s Central Prison in a well-planned escape reminiscent of the cult classic movie The Shawshank Redemption.
However, their brief freedom was cut short when authorities captured them less than 24 hours later following a high-speed chase through the desert.
Kuwait’s Interior Ministry named Kuwaiti nationals Hassan Salem Al-Rashidi and Ali Manahi Al-Subaie, alongside a non-Kuwaiti resident Ahmed Mohammed Qate’, as the fugitives who escaped the facility in the early hours of Monday morning.
Al Arabiya reported that the inmates began their escape at 2.45am, breaking through a section of an inner wall and crawling through air conditioning vents. They then climbed an abandoned guard tower to reach an upper room, from which they rappelled down the external prison walls using a makeshift rope crafted from a plastic hose and clothing.
Kuwaiti media reports suggest that one of the inmates went to his family home to change his clothes and steal a van. He was spotted by his mother, who immediately alerted the police, revealing the prison break and sparking an intensive manhunt.
Investigations also revealed that Al-Subaie stopped at a grocery store to buy food and water after the escape, allowing authorities to track and pinpoint the fugitives’ movements.
Their bid for freedom came to an end when security forces intercepted and arrested them in the Al-Liyyah desert following a high-speed pursuit.
The swift operation brought an end to the intensive manhunt, with authorities praising the rapid response of the Interior Ministry personnel.
