A major project has been approved to reduce traffic congestion and improve road safety in Hamad Town, one of Bahrain’s busiest and most densely populated residential areas.
The Works Ministry has officially given the green light to a proposal submitted by the Northern Municipal Council to construct a new traffic island on Road Three, the busy stretch separating Blocks 1203 and 1205 in Hamad Town.
The approval was formally conveyed yesterday by Works Ministry Under-Secretary Shaikh Mishal bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, following a technical study that found the project would significantly improve traffic flow while reducing accident risks at one of the town’s most heavily used intersections.
According to the ministry, the proposed roundabout-style island is expected to improve vehicle movement across the surrounding road network and raise overall traffic safety standards in the area.
“Detailed studies have confirmed that the proposed project will improve the operational efficiency of the road, increase traffic flow and enhance safety standards at the intersection,” said Shaikh Mishal.
He explained that preliminary engineering designs have already been completed and the project will move forward once final technical drawings are prepared, approvals are secured from all service authorities and the required financial allocations become available.
The development comes as a major boost for Hamad Town, represented by four municipal councillors and home to thousands of families facing growing traffic pressures due to its expanding population density.
Welcoming the approval, area councillor Abdulla Al Qobaisi, who pushed for the proposal, said residents had long raised concerns over traffic bottlenecks along the busy road corridor.
“This is an important step forward for residents who have repeatedly highlighted the need for urgent solutions in this area,” said Mr Al Qobaisi. “The new traffic island will improve movement between neighbourhoods, reduce congestion during peak hours and, most importantly, provide safer road conditions for motorists and families living nearby.”
Residents in Hamad Town have increasingly called for infrastructure upgrades in recent years as population growth has placed additional pressure on roads and public services.
Officials say the latest approval reflects ongoing efforts to modernise Bahrain’s road network while responding directly to municipal proposals aimed at improving everyday life for residents across the kingdom.
