I am writing this letter to raise awareness about the dangers of leaving a child or a pet inside a car.
Each year, dozens of children and untold numbers of pets left in parked vehicles die from hyperthermia (when the body absorbs more heat than it can handle).
Hyperthermia can occur on a mild day with temperatures in the 20s. The temperature inside a parked vehicle can rapidly rise to a dangerous level, despite the windows being slightly open – which, by the way, does not significantly decrease the heating rate.
I get that people do not mean to do wrong, but they underestimate the damage heat can cause.
In Bahrain, temperatures over 40C have already been reached outside. In a car, the temperature rises even more, which makes it deadly. Sometimes, adults leave children behind not realising that a child’s body temperature rises three to five times faster than an adult’s.
So please, no matter what, never leave a child or an animal in the car while you are out shopping!
