CYCLING – TEAM Bahrain Victorious rider Edoardo Zambanini came one place shy of climbing the podium yesterday in the third stage of the 32nd Tour of Slovenia.
Zambanini ranked fourth at the end of the 133.5-kilometre leg, which ended with a furious bunch sprint to the finish that was spearheaded by Laurence Pithie of Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe, who is also the leader in the general classification and points standings.
Zambanini’s result yesterday earned him a one-position climb on the overall standings, where he is now third – just 22 seconds behind Pithie. He is also second on points, with Pithie boasting a 30-point advantage.
Amongst Bahrain Victorious’ other competitors in yesterday’s third stage, Max van der Meulen was 25th, Jakob Omrzel finished 28th, Fran Miholjevic was 47th, Oliver Stockwell came 54th, Roman Ermakov finished 61st, and Alberto Bruttomesso was 85th.
Van der Meulen, Omrzel, and Ermakov were all in the top five in the best young rider classification, placing second, third, and fifth, respectively.
The Tour of Slovenia continues today with the fourth and penultimate stage, covering 184.7km.
Meanwhile, also yesterday, Bahrain Victorious’ Pau Miquel took ninth place in stage three of the 89th Tour de Suisse.
Miquel was part of a group sprint to the finish, led by Jhonatan Narvaez of UAE Team Emirates-XRG, who won the 157.4km leg.
The race continues today with the fourth and penultimate stage – a 23.7km individual time trial.
