A woman described by authorities as an African national has been sentenced to six months in prison by the Lower Criminal Court for using a forged university degree and knowingly submitting it to obtain official recognition.
According to the Public Prosecution, the case came to light following a report from the Education Ministry after the woman’s qualifications were submitted for review. Further examination revealed that the degree certificate was forged.
The irregularity was detected during inspection and verification procedures carried out by the ministry in co-ordination with a specialised auditing company responsible for ensuring compliance with approved standards and verifying the authenticity of academic qualifications required for teaching roles.
An investigation was subsequently launched, with witness testimony confirming that the certificate was forged.
The auditing company found that the university to which the certificate was attributed had not issued it.
The Public Prosecution referred the case to the Lower Criminal Court, which issued the verdict.
The woman will be deported upon completion of her sentence.
