Dubai Police have summoned a driver who deliberately removed his vehicle’s number plates in an attempt to evade smart traffic enforcement systems before driving at speeds exceeding 230 km/h, in a dangerous display of reckless behaviour that posed a serious threat to public safety.
Brigadier Jumaa Salem bin Suwaidan, Director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, said advanced traffic monitoring systems detected a grey Nissan Patrol committing a series of serious traffic offences at multiple locations across Dubai, including exceeding the speed limits.
He explained that the driver wrongly believed removing the vehicle’s number plates would prevent the authorities from identifying him. However, Dubai Police’s advanced security system, supported by artificial intelligence technologies and highly skilled field teams, successfully tracked the vehicle, identified the driver and summoned him.
Brigadier bin Suwaidan stressed that excessive speeding remains one of the leading causes of serious road traffic collisions, as it significantly reduces reaction time, increases stopping distance and makes it more difficult for drivers to maintain control of their vehicles during emergencies, resulting in a greater risk of fatal and serious injuries.
He added that driving at such extreme speeds endangers not only the driver but every road user, as even a minor mistake or sudden manoeuvre can result in a devastating collision affecting innocent people and their families. He stressed that speeding does not shorten the journey, but instead increases the risk of never reaching the destination.
He further emphasised that deliberately removing or tampering with vehicle number plates to evade smart enforcement systems is a serious offence and will not prevent offenders from being identified. Dubai Police possesses advanced technologies capable of detecting various methods used to avoid enforcement, supported by highly trained field personnel.
Following the driver’s summons, Dubai Police impounded the vehicle and initiated the necessary legal procedures. The vehicle is subject to the provisions of Dubai’s Decree No. 30 of 2023 concerning vehicle impoundment, under which motorists committing serious traffic offences may be required to pay up to AED 50,000 to secure the release of an impounded vehicle. The driver has also been referred to the competent authorities to complete the legal process.
Brigadier bin Suwaidan urged all motorists to comply with traffic laws, observe speed limits and refrain from dangerous or deceptive behaviour on the roads. He affirmed that Dubai Police will continue strengthening traffic enforcement through advanced smart technologies alongside awareness campaigns and targeted enforcement operations to safeguard lives and property.
