Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Minister Wael Al Mubarak has affirmed that the ministry is pressing ahead with plans to strengthen Bahrain’s food security, enhance municipal services and support sustainable development, while accelerating digital transformation and modernising legislation in line with the kingdom’s vision and the directives of its leadership.
In an extensive interview with our sister newspaper Akhbar Al Khaleej, the minister revealed that the ministry has launched a new phase of support for the agricultural sector by allocating 18 agricultural plots to Bahraini farmers, covering a total area of more than 122,000 square metres. He said the initiative is expected to increase local agricultural production by around eight per cent.
Mr Al Mubarak explained that this marks the first phase of the programme, with additional stages planned to allocate more agricultural land to Bahraini farmers, further strengthening the kingdom’s food security.
Highlighting the role of municipal councils, the minister said they play a key part in setting priorities for municipal services. He noted that, up to the fourth session of the sixth municipal term, the ministry had received 1,330 recommendations from the councils, helping shape development plans and projects across all governorates and reflecting the close partnership between the ministry and the councils in addressing citizens’ needs.
The minister also outlined a number of municipal and development projects currently under way, including the upgrading of parks, markets, waterfronts and public facilities. Several projects are nearing completion, including Al Wafaa Park in Riffa, Casino Park in Muharraq, Al Muraqib Park, a park in Al Ramli Suburb, the Seef Downtown project, Sitra Central Market, and a new market in Isa Town being developed in partnership with the private sector.
He added that the ministry is also implementing a series of waterfront and pedestrian walkway projects, including the first phase of the King Faisal Corniche in Manama, Abu Subh Beach, and Karzakkan Beach, which has reached the tender stage.
Other projects include the development of Al Askar Walkway and Al Istiqlal Walkway, as well as the installation of water mist cooling systems along Hamad Town Walkway to enhance the urban environment and provide modern recreational and public amenities for citizens and residents.
