Bahrain’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York Ambassador Jamal Fares Alrowaiei strongly condemned the Iranian attacks on GCC states and Jordan, as well as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
These actions threaten regional security and international maritime routes, Mr Alrowaiei said at the UN Security Council session on strengthening the peaceful settlement of disputes.
Addressing regional developments, Mr Alrowaiei cited Iran’s non-compliance with its commitments, including those under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, and its violation of Resolution 2817, co-sponsored by 136 countries, as well as its persistent failure to comply with numerous UN resolutions calling for responsible behaviour and an end to support for proxy groups.
He noted that despite several targeted countries having previously played positive roles in mediating between Iran and the international community, Iran nevertheless targeted them.
He also referred to Resolution 2788, unanimously adopted by the Security Council in 2025 following a Pakistani initiative, emphasising the need to move beyond reaffirming principles towards the effective and consistent implementation of dispute settlement mechanisms.
Mr Alrowaiei highlighted that successful mediation requires a cessation of hostilities, respect for state sovereignty and territorial integrity, compliance with international law and Security Council resolutions, and the protection of maritime navigation to provide the necessary time and space for diplomacy.
