Residents of the Southern Governorate, who are eligible to receive municipal disposable trash bags, have been inconvenienced by the prolonged failure of bag dispensers.
I usually collect my allocation from the dispenser at Enma Mall, but it has not been working since March. I kept trying over the past months and it was sometimes unresponsive despite being full of bags, and sometimes totally empty. When I contacted the municipality yesterday, I was told that all dispensers in the Southern Governorate are currently ‘under maintenance’.
Residents are instead asked to collect their bags from municipal offices, which are open only from 7am to 1.30pm – hours that are inconvenient for many people.
The purpose of installing these dispensers was to make the service more accessible. If the service has been outsourced, the municipality should ensure that the contractor maintains it properly. Public services should be monitored and maintained so that they continue to provide the convenience they were designed to offer.
