A 43-year-old man allegedly stole a delivery driver’s motorcycle at knifepoint, after the driver refused to let him take it for a joyride.
The Bahraini is on trial at the High Criminal Court for theft under threat of violence, and the first hearing took place yesterday.
“It was 4pm and I was making a delivery in Isa Town,” the 21-year-old Pakistani courier recounted of the April incident.
“I realised that the delivery address given to me was wrong, and stopped near a building to contact the customer.
“Out of nowhere, the defendant appeared and demanded to take my motorcycle for a ride. I excused myself because I had many orders and customers to reach.
“He pulled out a knife from his pants pocket and threatened to assault me if I didn’t move away from the bike.
“Fearing for my life, I backed away, and the defendant got on the motorcycle and drove off.”
After reporting the incident to the police, a detective claimed he identified the suspect through an investigation and an informant.
The expat victim was able to confirm the identity of the alleged thief when shown a photo of him. The 43-year-old was brought before the Public Prosecution, and the case was referred to court.
According to court files, the defendant has previous criminal convictions on record.
Judges set August 10 as the date of the next hearing, when the defendant will be brought to the courthouse from remand custody.
