In a confusing Alaskan Senate race, former Anchorage mayor Dan A. Sullivan has endorsed Republican senator Dan S. Sullivan for re-election over a rival challenger, retired teacher Dan J. Sullivan.
"As the OG Dan Sullivan, I urge Alaskans to vote for Sen. Dan S. Sullivan. He’s been great for Alaska," the former mayor wrote on Facebook.
US President Donald Trump also weighed in on social media, writing: "ALASKA: Be careful. VOTE FOR THE REAL DAN SULLIVAN TODAY. The Democrats know how good he is and have put up an imposter of the same name".
The unusual race has drawn widespread attention, not only due to its competitiveness but also because two candidates share the exact same name. State election officials initially disqualified Dan J. Sullivan before the Alaska Supreme Court ruled that he could remain on the ballot.
Last month, state prosecutors reportedly investigated whether the challenger's run was part of a broader conspiracy, following allegations by Dan S. Sullivan that his opponent entered the race specifically to confuse voters. Grand jury subpoenas were subsequently issued to compel information from witnesses linked to Dan J. Sullivan’s campaign.
None of the three Sullivans are related.
