Instead of keeping young learners away from artificial intelligence, government schools are integrating foundational computing, logic, and smart learning tools straight into primary education – and private schools are following suit.
From the Ministry of Education’s perspective, delaying a child’s exposure to AI creates an unnecessary disadvantage, leaving them less prepared for a rapidly changing global workforce.
Where New York sees a threat to a child’s independent development, Bahrain sees a challenge of governance.
The concerns raised by Bahraini educators and policymakers do not advocate for pulling the plug on classrooms.
Instead, the focus centres on managing digital wellbeing, ensuring proper screen-time boundaries, and safeguarding personal data under national privacy laws.
The goal is to build secure, teacher-supervised and parent-managed environments where the technology acts as an adaptive tutor rather than an unsupervised distraction or as a digital babysitter.
Ultimately, these contrasting policies reflect different philosophies regarding digital freedom and human agency.
New York prioritises freedom from technological dependency during a child’s formative years, arguing that true independence requires learning how to think before learning how to prompt.
Bahrain, on the other hand, prioritises freedom to engage, believing that true independence comes from early mastery, ethical digital literacy, and confident navigation of advanced technology.
Neither model ignores the obvious risks involved with emerging technology.
However, while one system chooses to build a protective fence around early childhood education, the other builds guardrails directly into the learning experience itself.
