Two men were restrained on a long-haul flight from Australia to Qatar after turning violent, claiming they had a gun, and threatening to shoot people on board.
The incident took place aboard a Qatar Airways-operated Virgin Australia flight travelling from Melbourne to Doha on Friday.
Eyewitnesses reported that the two men appeared restless and agitated shortly after take-off, repeatedly pacing the aisles, disrupting nearby passengers, and searching through overhead luggage bins.
Around six hours before flight VA7 was scheduled to land, their behaviour escalated dramatically. They began arguing, fighting, and shouting threats across the cabin, claiming they possessed a firearm and intended to shoot passengers.
Passengers reported seeing the men headbutt and spit at crew members who tried to intervene.
Flight attendants restrained the men to their seats with the help of several passengers. Local reports stated that it required six to seven people to pin each man down during the violent struggle. The crew used cable ties and handcuffs to secure both men for the remainder of the flight.
In a statement, Qatar Airways confirmed that a physical altercation occurred on board. The airline stated that the disruptive passengers were restrained according to standard procedure and handed over to authorities upon arrival in Doha.
