An inmate who cursed at a prison guard in English and hurled a shoe at him, striking him in the face during a pill call, has been sentenced to five years in prison.
The court heard that the police officer was distributing medication to inmates and was asking the defendant for his name and CPR number when the latter launched the footwear assault.
The 29-year-old Bahraini has lodged an objection against the verdict at the High Criminal Court, since it was issued in absentia, and will learn his fate next week.
“I was doing my job in prison, handing prescriptions to inmates in Building 3,” the policeman testified.
“I asked the defendant for his information so he could receive his medications, but he refused. I then told him I would not give him the medication and he insulted me and threw his shoe at me.”
According to court documents, the victim suspected that his nose had been broken, but it appeared that no lasting damage was caused.
The offender was charged and, in August, convicted of assaulting an on-duty member of the public security forces without causing long-term injury.
He was also convicted of showing disrespect, insulting the officer’s honour and damaging his reputation by making a claim that ‘had no basis in reality’.
The Bahraini reportedly admitted to the charges, and the incident was captured on CCTV.
Judges have set September 29 as the date to issue a ruling in the case.
