A 74-year-old hunter from Maryland has been charged with manslaughter after shooting and killing a woman walking through a field after mistaking her for a deer.
Walter Moorhead was hunting from a ground blind on September 18 when he opened fire, hitting 39-year-old Santos Maria Chilel Soto of Georgetown, Delaware.
Despite receiving immediate medical care, Soto was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Soto, a Guatemalan immigrant, was walking through the field with a man and two children when the shooting occurred.
Following an investigation by responding police officers, Moorhead was identified as the shooter and arrested. He faces charges of manslaughter, possession of a firearm during a felony and three counts of first-degree reckless endangerment.
Moorhead was released after posting a $43,000 cash bond following his arraignment.
