Bahrain’s Shamil Sharipov won the bronze medal in the men’s 125kg freestyle wrestling competition at the 20th Asian Games, increasing the Kingdom’s medal tally to 22, including 11 gold, five silver and six bronze medals.
Sharipov opened his campaign with an 11-0 victory over South Korea’s Kim Gwanuk in the round of 16, before defeating Kyrgyzstan’s Arslanbek Turdubekov by the same score in the quarterfinals to reach the semifinals.
He then lost to China’s Buheeerdun by fall in the semifinals, moving into the bronze medal bout.
Sharipov secured third place with a 9-0 victory over Mongolia’s Batbayar Nambardagva, earning Bahrain its fifth wrestling medal at the Games.
In other freestyle wrestling events, Bahrain’s Khidir Saipudinov lost 9-5 to Kyrgyzstan’s Malik Shavaev in the round of 16 of the 86kg category.
Ali Begov also exited the competition in the round of 16 of the 65kg category after his bout against South Korea’s Yun Junsik ended 5-5, with the Korean wrestler advancing on criteria.
Bahrain will continue competing in wrestling and taekwondo tomorrow, as the Asian Games enter the final stages ahead of the October 4 conclusion.
In freestyle wrestling, Magomedrasul Asluev will compete in the 74kg category, while Magomed Sharipov will take part in the 97kg category, with both aiming to secure leading positions.
In taekwondo, Ola Al Doseri will begin her campaign in the women’s over-67kg category in the round of 16.
Bahrain continues to increase its medal tally at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, with several sports contributing to the Kingdom’s results.
