MP Jalila Al Sayed has made history by becoming Bahrain’s first woman first deputy speaker of Parliament, securing 21 votes in a three-way contest for the vacant post.
Ms Al Sayed defeated fellow candidates MP Bassema Mubarak, who received five votes, and MP Abdulla Al Romaihi, who secured eight votes.
Her election marks a new milestone for women’s representation in Bahrain’s Parliament, following in the footsteps of Fouzia Zainal, who served as the country’s first woman Speaker of Parliament from 2018 to 2022.
The First Deputy Speaker’s position became vacant in May following the revocation of the membership of three MPs, including former first deputy speaker Abdulnabi Salman.
A total of 35 ballot papers were available for the election, with two MPs absent from the session in addition to the three whose memberships had been revoked.
