MANAMA: Twelve men have been remanded in custody following questioning by the Public Prosecution in the case of a farm that allegedly bought expired milk and sold it to customers as fresh milk.
The GDN yesterday quoted the Interior Ministry as saying that a farm in Maqaba was involved in the scandal. Thirteen men were questioned but one suspect was released due to him being elderly, revealed ministries and public authorities prosecution head Mamdooh Al Ma’awada.
“We received a case from the Interior Ministry’s Criminal Investigation Directorate that large quantities of milk products were confiscated from a private establishment that didn’t comply with standards,” he said.
“The so-called fresh milk was being sold as fresh but in reality it was mixed with long life milk and was being sold for high prices as if it was natural.
“We contacted Health as well as Industry, Commerce and Tourism Ministries to take action against the establishment,” he said.
“From our side we immediately went on a field check to the establishment’s farm in Maqaba and one of its branches in Muharraq and we ordered their closure until necessary checks and investigations are completed.
“We questioned 13 suspects and 12 have been remanded in custody; the last was an elderly man whose medical condition is difficult. Investigations are continuing as reports are awaited from the two ministries.”
