Bahrain: Dubbed the new Fifty Shades of Grey, I was intrigued to read the first instalment of Calendar Girl by Audrey Carlan.
Released in January 2015, the series of books came out each month throughout last year.
The stories are told from the point of view of main character Mia, as she navigates the world of escorting in order to pay off the serious debt her father has accumulated.
Like 50 Shades of Grey, the writing is simple and doesn’t require much thought, but for me that makes great poolside reading every now and then.
I found the January instalment of the book reminiscent of The Intimate Adventures of a London Call Girl, which featured the memoirs of a former London call girl.
Calendar Girl is however set in the US and the story is told from month to month due to the fact that Mia’s clients are with her on a monthly basis ensuring she gets top dollar for her time.
Mia is an aspiring actress, who puts her entire life on hold to rid her father of his $1 million debt to a loan shark who has threatened to kill him.
She is also responsible for her sister who is in school and must pay her fees.
This leads her into the world of escorting courtesy of her aunt, who conveniently owns a business doing just that.
While there is no depth to this book and though some may feel it unbelievable, people somewhere live these lives and that made it an interesting read for me.
Something that caught my attention was Mia’s fight with herself, between her morals and actually enjoying the company of this rich, gorgeous man who was giving her all his attention.
I would definitely consider the Calendar Girl series something for the ladies, however, don’t expect it to be anything other than a quick and simple read.
The Calendar Girl series is available for download from all major online book stores, but I downloaded it from Kobo.com.
